North Webster : a photographic history of a Black community. By Ann Morris, Henrietta Ambrose, and John Wm Nagel.

North Webster is a black middle-class suburb of St. Louis, nestled against the upper-middle-class white suburb of Webster Groves. Originally, the black familes of the former worked for the white families of the latter; the area's history is also complicated by the fact Missouri was a border state, with many southern characteristics but without an economy built on slavery. In any case, Morris and Ambrose tell an embattled but triumphant story of strong families, old-time religion, and an emphasis on education as the true path to freedom. Extraordinary photographs.
